If any of these sound familiar

Yellow is the most dangerous status color.

Green is great. Red is trouble, but at least you know what you're dealing with. Yellow is the project that says everything's fine when instincts say otherwise.

  • Status reports keep saying "yellow" but the team feels like it's red.
  • The executive sponsor was deeply engaged at kickoff and is now hard to find.
  • Scope conversations from six months ago are being reiterated this week.
  • Vendor reassurance is starting to sound like vendor management.
  • You can't honestly say the project will deliver the original business case.

What the Scorecard measures

Eight dimensions where projects fail.

Most project failures aren't surprises, they're patterns. The Scorecard assesses your project across the eight dimensions where pattern recognition is most diagnostic.

i.

Executive Sponsorship & Governance

Is there a real sponsor making real decisions on a real cadence? Or has the project quietly drifted into governance limbo?

ii.

Scope & Requirements Clarity

Is the project's definition stable and agreed? Or are scope conversations from kickoff still being reiterated today? Has scope creep entered the picture?

iii.

Stakeholder Alignment

Are the people who matter pulling in the same direction? Or are competing priorities creating quiet rework?

iv.

Change Control Discipline

When something changes, does the plan change with it? Or is the plan and the actual work increasingly disconnected?

v.

Schedule & Budget Health

Are the numbers honest? Do you trust the status reports? Or have you stopped looking at them carefully?

vi.

Team Health & Capacity

Does the team have the depth to deliver? Or is the project running on a few exhausted people who haven't said anything yet?

vii.

Vendor & Partner Risk

Are vendors performing as committed? Or is "vendor reassurance" starting to feel like vendor management?

viii.

Value & Outcome Tracking

Will the project actually deliver the original business case? Or has the definition of success quietly drifted?

What you'll find out

Your project lands in one of three diagnostic tiers.

The Scorecard's outcome is calibrated, honest, and specific. No false comfort, no false alarm.

Healthy

0-30%

Your project is in genuinely good shape. The patterns that produce healthy projects can erode quietly and your report tells you what to protect.

Warning

31-65%

Your project shows treatable issues. Acting in the next 30 days is significantly cheaper than acting in 90. Yellow is the most dangerous status color and your report tells you which yellows should be red.

Critical

66%+

Your project is in serious trouble and will likely miss its business case without intervention. The report is honest about what you're facing and what it would take to stabilize.

Who's reviewing your report

Three decades of catching what others miss.

I've spent 30 years rescuing failing projects across healthcare, IT, finance, and government. The Rescue My Project™ methodology underneath this Scorecard was peer-reviewed and originally published by the Project Management Institute, Global Congress 2010. Taught to thousands of project managers and refined across 150+ project rescues over three decades.

Most projects don't fail overnight. There are signs and symptoms, patterns, that we can be watching for. Most projects don't fail because of strategy. They fail because of misaligned priorities and expectations, communication breakdown, system fragmentation, and the absence of disciplined execution governance. The Scorecard surfaces those patterns, and my additional personal notes to you tell you what to do about them.
